MULTITIDES
Vines Art Festival, Vancouver, 2024
A site-specific collaborative project initiated by Paula Viitanen, based on her notebook entries and photographs.
Installed on the tidal flats of Spanish Banks (šxʷsyiΦǝm / Ḵweḵw7úpay̓), Multitides invited visitors into an immersive landscape shaped by the rhythms of the sea. Liz Wurzinger designed the project’s visual identity and interactive map, which guided participants through the intertidal zone via wayfinding prompts, a handmade viewfinder, and access to a live-generated soundscape by Elliot Vaughan, composed in real time from tidal data.
Visual design elements by Liz were present throughout the experience, providing tactile and intuitive points of connection between participants and place.

We acknowledge this project took place on the stolen, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We stand in solidarity with movements for justice and liberation worldwide.
